Writing can be one of the most challenging subjects to teach in TK. Students come with limited experience and are developmentally ready for very specific writing activities. As our training said today, “Often the invitation to write is given and the answer is ‘Not right now, thank you.'” Among other things from the “Write from the Beginning and Beyond” in the Thinking Maps training is the following writing stages document:

This can be a big help to parents, teachers, and care-givers who are trying to help their young ones who are pre-emergent writers. Now you can say, “Scribbles are okay if that is the stage of development you are at.” Let’s not stay at that stage any longer than you need to but let’s let writing develop along with your hands and your other complex learning processes.
